A few years ago, I worked with Smile Brilliant on a teeth whitening partnership and was so happy with my results. Their teeth whitening process involves custom-fitted teeth whitening trays with a whitening gel and a desensitizing gel; it was an easy, painless process. Since then, Smile Brilliant has put out a plethora of oral care products: electric toothbrush, water flosser, teeth grinding night guards, plaque highlighters, retainer cleaning tablets, oral and sinus probiotics for kids, and dental probiotics. When I learned that they were continuing their oral health research, I was excited to learn about (and try) their cariPRO dental probiotics.

Since my grad school studies are focused on medical microbiology, a significant portion of my courses revolve around the human microbiome and how it may be the key to treating and even preventing several different ailments. Many people have been familiar with taking probiotics for their gut microbiome over the last several years, and now there are more and more studies that suggest the benefit of taking dental probiotics.
Our mouths are colonized by both good and bad bacteria, and a healthy population of good bacteria like Lactobacillus plantarum, Streptococcus salivariusis, and more is optimal to eliminate bad breath, reduce cavities, and fight gum inflammation. Bad bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, and others build up into biofilms around teeth that lead to plaque and tartar. Although mechanical oral hygiene such as brushing and flossing your teeth is an effective way to combat plaque and tartar, you can end up killing all of the bacteria, leaving your mouth with little protection against the bad bacteria.
Ok, so how can the cariPRO dental probiotics help improve my oral health and immunity?
Smile Brilliant’s cariPRO dental probiotics are chewable tablets taken nightly after brushing/flossing/rinsing that coat your mouth with good bacteria to prevent the biofilms of bad bacteria from populating your mouth overnight. Eventually, you can change the composition of your oral microbiome to promote good bacteria while reducing the population of bad bacteria. They also help improve the immunity of the upper respiratory system as the good bacteria also populate the sinuses and reduce ENT (ears, nose, and throat) infections.
Clinical grade dental probiotics have been shown to reduce plaque, cavities, gum inflammation, and bad breath. I have only been using the cariPRO dental probiotics for a couple of weeks now, but I’m looking forward to my next dental exam. It’s exciting to see the impact dental probiotics will have once it becomes more widely used!
